How many calories does boxing burn?

Boxing is one of the most efficient calorie burners in the gym — rounds on the bag, footwork drills, and partner work keep heart rate elevated while building skill. This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from exercise science references: roughly 6.0 for heavy bag or mitt work and about 8.4 for sparring or intense partner drills.

The formula is standard: calories per minute = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg) ÷ 200, then multiplied by session length. Heavier athletes burn more absolute calories; intensity matters as much as duration.

At Level Up Gym, boxing is woven into hybrid training and dedicated classes — not just cardio on a treadmill. Use this estimate to plan nutrition around class, then show up and let coaches dial in your real workload.

FAQ

Expect ±15–20% versus lab measurement. MET tables assume steady effort; real bag rounds include rest. Use results for planning, not guilt.
Usually yes — sparring and live drills run higher MET values (~7.8–9.0) because movement is less predictable and heart rate stays elevated. Heavy bag work is still a solid burn at ~6.0 MET.
If fat loss is the goal, you usually do not need to add back every class calorie — your activity level may already be in your TDEE. For performance or muscle gain, talk with a coach about fueling around sessions.
